Below are three photos I took March 9, after the first big deluge in the Boston area. The pictures show the Boston Trailer Park, a mobile home court in West Roxbury, which is within the limits of the city of Boston. When Beth and I moved to West Roxbury 10 years ago I discovered this place, tucked down a hill on Route 1, next to a few car dealerships and a little ways behind the iParty store.
I've long been fascinated by trailer parks, although I'm not sure exactly why. Perhaps because I imagine them to be populated with retired carnival workers, UFO enthusiasts, Hells Angels gone AWOL and other potentially unsavory but fascinating characters. More likely, though, trailer park residents are retired folks, blue collar workers and others who need cheap housing.
The Boston Trailer Park used to be bigger, but part of it was carved out for one of the nearby auto dealerships several years ago. I suppose one day the whole park will be gone, yet another vestige of a bygone time. For more of this type of writing and photos to match, check out The Backside of America.
